One Woman's Hell is Another Man's Pleasure

A reimagining of Auguste Rodin’s The Gates of Hell, highlighting the exploitative history of hysteria documented at Hôpital de la Salpêtrière which was used by Rodin as inspiration for the figures on his sculpture. Presented through video and projected onto parted curtains, the work positions the viewer as voyeur. By shifting focus from Rodin’s vision of male damnation to the gendered realities surrounding hysteria, the piece exposes how women’s suffering has been aestheticized, consumed, and confined.
